What Is Cannabis?

Cannabis refers to the group of plants known for their relaxing health benefits. There are three main types of cannabis plants. Cannabis sativa, cannabis indica and cannabis ruderalis.

The dried flowers from the female cannabis plant create one of the most common drugs on the planet, known as ‘weed’ or ‘marijuana.’ The resin from the flowers contains cannabinoids which cause varying degrees of psychoactivity when consumed. Each species of cannabis plant contains over 100 different cannabinoids

What Are Cannabinoids?

Scientists are unsure about the effects of every single cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. The two that are well known are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabis products can contain either CBD, THC, or a combination of both.

CBD is non-intoxicating and will not get you “high.” CBD products have become popular for their ability to reduce inflammation, anxiety, and pain. Various medications containing CBD have approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It can be used to treat certain types of epilepsy, seizures, and migraines. CBD is often derived from hemp to avoid THC. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid in Cannabis that is illegal in amounts over 0.3%.

Full Spectrum Vs. Broad Spectrum

CBD products are available with varying amounts of CBD and other ingredients. Full-spectrum products contain all the components of the cannabis plant, whereas broad-spectrum does not contain THC. The benefits between full spectrum vs broad spectrum CBD can vary, so it is worth researching before choosing your CBD products.

Types of Cannabis Plant

Sativa

This type of cannabis plant is high in THC and CBD, though it has lower levels of THC than the Indica variety. Sativa is known for its energizing, mood-lifting effects and tends to be used by people who suffer from depression and ADHD.

Indica

The Indica plant contains high levels of THC and low levels of CBD. It is considered to be the strongest type of cannabis. It tends to be used by people who suffer from insomnia as it is relaxing and sedating.

Ruderalis

Ruderalis is mainly used in medicinal cannabis products as it contains low levels of THC. It is rarely used for recreational purposes and is often used to create hybrid versions of cannabis. A hybrid occurs when two or more species of cannabis are crossed to create a new type of cannabis.
